Sandra L. Cravatta, age 82, of Alexandria, formerly of Streator and Olney, Illinois, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at her home.
Sandra Lee (Smalley) Cravatta was born on October 16, 1942, to Elliot and Dorthy (Cavanaugh) Smalley in Streator, Illinois. As a young child, her family moved to Galeon, Ohio where she grew up. She graduated from Galeon High School in 1960. Sandra moved back to Streator in 1960, where she met her husband, Jerome Carl Cravatta. They were united in marriage on June 8, 1963, and had two children. Sandy, with her beloved husband by her side, built a full and vibrant life in Streator.
She wore many hats throughout her journey: She started a career working in manufacturing, managing rental properties, and even owning and operating not one but two businesses. In 1979, she and Jerry purchased Model Paris Cleaners, a venture that marked the beginning of their entrepreneurial spirit. After closing Model Paris, Sandy and Jerry discovered a love for camping in Olney, Illinois. In 1998, they took a leap of faith and purchased the campground that had become their retreat. It was here that Sandy found her true happy place – spending countless nights surrounded by family, friends, and the joy of the great outdoors and fishing. Winters were spent in Mississippi and Arizona, where she soaked up the warmth and made treasured memories. She also loved trips to Las Vegas, embracing the excitement and fun that came with them. In 2020, Sandy and Jerry decided to retire for good, selling the campground and settling in Alexandria. Even in retirement, Sandy’s love for life never faded – she enjoyed peaceful days fishing and cruising on the pontoon, always finding joy in the simple pleasures. In Sandy’s spare time, she loved watching her grandchildren, painting, lounging by their pool with family and friends, playing solitaire and bowling.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and parents-in-law.
Sandy is survived by her husband, Jerry; son, Jerry (Beth) Cravatta of Streator, Illinois; daughter, Kim (Randy) Swenson of Alexandria; brother, Tony (Gayle) Cravatta of Streator, Illinois; five grandchildren, Christopher (Ashlee) Cravatta, Natalie (Matthew) Lanoue, Stephanie (Matt) Bowman, Trevor Cravatta, and Lauren (Riley) Campbell; six great-grandchildren, Case, Colbie, Alayna, Audrey, Brooks, and Grace; along with several nieces and nephews.
Sandy’s adventurous spirit, warmth, and love for family and friends will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
